DAvg counter high on ESXi 5.0

Running ESX5.0 U2.  See ESXTop DAvg counter going from .00 to 5000.00 or higher.  There are no guests on the host.  The host is a standalone, not added to vCenter inventory.

All iSCSI storage LUNS are accessible by this host the same as with 24 other hosts.  I rebuilt the host last week not preserving the existing vmfs datastoe.  Have the same issue.

Need to move the host to production, but have reservations because of the high DAvg.  None of the other hosts with VM running on them have this issue.   Has anyone seen this

condition before and have a fix ?  Thanks.

Re: ESXi 5.5 Build 1474528 - VMDirectPath ATI Bonaire XT - Code 43 after VM Reboot -> OK after Host Reboot -> rinse and repeat

Finally i am making "some" progress.

After downgrading the Host to the previously known-to-work version 5.1u2, just to realize this one shows the exact same behavior with the HD7790 (Code 43 after VM reboot) i did a complete fresh reinstall of 5.5 and gave the passthru.map another try.

Will setting resetMethod to bridge, link and flr didn't make any difference i am now getting a interrupt related PSOD using d3d0 in the final stage of the Windows Bootloader after rebooting the VM.

So adding:

# ATI

1002 ffff d3d0 false

to /etc/vmware/passthru.map (and rebooting the host) now gives me:

vmvisor-5.5.0-1331820_passthru-1002_ffff-d3d0-false.png

after rebooting the VM with the passed thru HD7790.

As before, the initial boot of the VM is working fine regardless of these settings.

Ops... yes, of course NPIV (I just finished configuring a BTN network switch and made confusion )

I though it worked as you said, but when I tried, in september, I've not been able to have the tape directly seen by the VM.

Re: VcFolder walking from Datacenter

For me, that code fails right away with an invalid iterator for you first for loop.. according to the API Explorer, the datacenter.vmFolder property returns a Single "VcFolder" object, not an array of anything.

Once you have the VcFolder object, the childType and childEntity properties are each returned as Arrays - so that is where you would need to do your loop.

For example:

var dcFolder = datacenter.vmFolder; // Returns a vcFolder object
System.log("dcFolder:"+dcFolder);
var children = dcFolder.childEntity;
for each (child in children){    System.log("Child: "+child.name+" :: "+System.getObjectType(child));
}

Generates The following for one of my labs:

Moving ESXi 5.1 cluster to new hardware

I have an ESXi 5.1 cluster made up of 2 Sun servers that I want to retire - Sun #2 is the better of the 2 servers.   i have 2 new Dell R620's all racked up, cabled and pre-loaded with 5.1 U1.  My licensing is for 4 sockets, and vCenter is a VM in the cluster,   I want to get everything moved over to the new hardware with minimal or no downtime.

Would these be the correct steps to follow?

1.    Set up networking config on Dell servers and storage appropriately ( I am comfortable with this part).

2.    Migrate all VM's to Sun 2.

3.    Shut down Sun 1 and remove from cluster

4.    Add Dell 1 to cluster

5.    migrate VM's to Dell 1

6.    Shut down Sun 2 and remove from cluster

7.     Add Dell 2 and move VM's as desired.

The Sun servers were not identical so the EVC mode is Intel "Penryn".    The specs say that future Intel processors can join this cluster, so it should not be an issue running 1 Dell and 1 Sun temporarily, correct?  The R620's are identical so once they are both in the cluster can/should I disable EVC mode?    I would have to reboot each VM afterward so it would see the new processor features, correct?

Is there anything else I need to consider.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Mordzy,

I am guessing that warning is coming up at the edit setting menu in vSphere, when you try to add more?

If so , It is warning you because some OS's take issue with CPU's being added or subtracted.

Keep in mind the following, Weinstein pointed out, You can absolutely add more vCPU's, just keep in mind that the rule of thumb is to never have more vCPU's on a VM, than physical cores in the box. You also want to be careful of having too many vCPU's (spread amongst many VM's) on the same physical host, as that can cause degradation.

That said, if this is the only VM on the box, you could try snapshotting the server first, then adding another vCPU, and seeing how that affects the performance of your VM.

Is “Error. No View Planner report is generated by the reporting script" gone?

10.6 Server virtual machine on a 2013 iMac i5 Intel Core Haswell processor?

Hello,

Is it possible to create a 10.6 Server virtual machine on a new 2013 iMac i5 Intel Core Haswell processor with 10.9 Mavericks pre installed on the iMac?   I need some advice if this can be done regardless of the difference in drivers that are on the 10.6.3 Server DVD.

Thank you.

Orphaned transient VM and Post Installation Script not running

$

I am stumped

I am maintainig a VMware Ready appliance built on Studio 2.6 running Ubuntu 10.04.  Our company recently made some network changes and now I have two issues with my builds.

1.  The transient VM is deleted from the data store but the host Database is not updated resulting in an orphaned VM on the host.

2.  The Post installation script does not run.  This is a major issue as we move files around and tweak the system.

The Logs show no errors and the build completes in a timely fashion.

If I move the Studio appliance into a test lab environment fire walled from my production environment, everything works perfectly.

The build still has the same two issues above running on different host or running on an isolated virtual switch.

I might have more luck debugging knew which log to look at for post installation scripts messages.

vCHS | DRaaS | Shared or Dedicated Resources?

I know DRaaS is a new service offering. Does anyone know if how it is consumed? Is it offered on Shared HW or Dedicated HW? Is there a choice? I can not seem to find it in any of the documentation.

Thanks!

You could do this a bunch of ways, but I wouldn't recommend removing SUN #1 from the cluster until you are 100% done with the migration. That leaves you exposed from an HA perspective (Assuming this is production, since you want little downtime), and is an unnecessary step. RE licensing, since this is a straight migration, keep the R620's in eval mode, and change the licensing over afterwards. That will allow you to swing the environment MUCH easier.

Here's what I would do (emulating your list)

1) Setup networking / storage on R620's, to be compatible with the old SUN servers.

2) Introduce the R620's to the cluster

3) Migrate a low priority / test VM to new hosts, testing vMotion and networking.

4) Migrate the bulk of the VM's the new hosts.

5) Migrate vCenter VM last (just to be safe)

6) Put SUN 1 and 2 in maintenance mode. Leave them in the cluster for a few days just in case

7) Remove SUN 1/2 from cluster after everything is running fine, remove old hosts from vCenter and shut down. Clean up network and storage configuration respectively (be careful here).

8) Raise EVC Mode to the highest appropriate level (Sandy Bridge, I am guessing).

9) This is important, read closely. If you want to raise the EVC level, after the old hosts are completely gone and dead, Completely shut down each VM one by one, then power back on. This will raise the EVC functional level to the new level. Simply rebooting the guest OS will not do it. You can confirm this by going to hosts and clusters view > Virtual machines > Add the EVC column.

Thank you, thank you, the cache in PowerGUI was it.  This was a case of not knowing the exact name to search.  I was thinking it was PowerCLI, but yes, it was the intellisense in PowerGUI, I removed the folder, started PowerGUI and after a few minutes, everything loaded back in, and I can see the cmdlets.

Wow, I've been at this for quite some time today.  Thanks for the help.

Re:

Glad to help, I know how frustrating it can be, especially the amount of times I unload and reload PowerCLI

Yes its gone. It no longer says that in the PDF.

However, the PDF remains incomplete - stats are only reported for a few of the operations with the majority 'missing events'

(I did watch the automation and it appeared as though everything performed just fine with no errors, or stuck on unexpected windows etc)

Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 Failover Clusters

I have read VMware documents where the options to install Windows 2008R2 Failover cluster can be "in a box"  or "Ouside the box" .   there is another but I need to have both nodes virtual.

In the "outside the box" option, it states that the shared disk must be a FibreChannel disk.   Is that correct?  Can it be any other type?

I haven't seen that error before, they might just be system noise; however, is anything going wrong in your environment that is causing you to look at the logs?

If so, do you have a case open with VMware Support yet? They have very good large parsing utilities that might be able to help here.
