Re: Update VSAN configuration taking a long time

Well last night I tried again. Here is the path I took and the conclusion. Hint: it didn't go well...

Start with freshly build ESXi 5.5 up1 hosts.

1. Created a cluster with the following enabled

  DRS - Full Auto

  HA - Admission Control Disabled

  vSAN - Manual

2. Checked all 3 hosts for required settings and networking

3. Placed all 3 hosts into maintenance mode

4. Added hosts to vSAN cluster one at a time waiting for the "Update VSAN Config" to fully complete.

5. Verified all 3 hosts still saw both their SSd and HDD.

6. Exited Maint Mode 1 at a time waiting for the process to complete before removing the next from Maint Mode

7. Double checked all settings once again. (Figured treating this like a rocket launch would help).

8. Before adding any disks to vSAN I reviewed the Cluster Props > vSAN > General page and it saw

  3 hosts,

  0 fo 3 Eligible SSDs,

  0 of 3 Data disks,

  Total Cap 0.00B,

  Free Cap 0.00 B

  Network Normal

  Looks good!

9. Selected esx01, Clicked "Created a new disk group"

10. Selected the one SSD and one HDD, clicked OK and waited for "Create a New disk group" task to complete...

Viewed the C# client and it stated "Initialize disks to be used by VSAN

I probably will put in a feature request to be more specific in the Web Client.

11. The task timed out after 30 minutes and the HDD had disappeared. There was a spike in traffic to the HDD but then it quickly died out. (See attached image)

I think the vCenter vpxd timeout might need to be increased possibly. But still I don't think its going to solve anything.

  http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1017253

It doesn't appear the GA vSAN is lab/enthusiast friendly at this point. If you are going to test for prod, you will probably need to pony up the cash for HW on the HCL.

Still I am going to export logs and open a case with VMware and see if they can lend a hand from purely a software POV.

This is obviously not 100% hardware related, there is probably a bug or mis-configuration somewhere. The fact that the host loses it's disk (a fully functional disk and controller w/o vSAN enabled) and has issues during reboots ONLY when vSAN is enabled means there is more going on under the hood.

So for now it appears vSAN is a no go for me unless VMware support is willing to lend a hand on unsupported HW and has some ideas.

Maybe someone reading this has other ideas.

Thanks, JKasal

Well after one week of non stop troubleshooting.... I discovered that the issue is related to SSO, eventhough SSO was reporting authentication is successful.

So I removed the "admin" account from SSO users and rebooted the vcenter server things start working right away.... since I upgraded sso from 5.1 to 5.5 the old system-domain "admin" account was in there some how it was causing the issue.

Please update if someone else find different fix.

It came up. On my previous try I forgot to modify the VMX to point to the snapshots.

Of course the filesystems are a mess now, but this I can manage - and the important data is there.

Thank you very much once again.

Hi,

Wow thanks for the update and the great detail you have supplied. Exactly the same scenario my end I'm afraid.

Please open the case and loop myself in as I'm happy to help provide logs etc to help get this resolved.

My AHCI driver is supported out of the box with 5.5U1 and might be able to lend a hand in getting this looked at?

Did the beta builds work for you at all? Do you know where the logs for vSAN are located?

Anyways let me know and happy to help out however possible!

Cool I'll keep you posted on any findings.

I'm not sure of any logs for vSAN. I know you can start a trace but I think (and I'm hoping192.168. I'll be corrected if wrong" the vSAN uses the host logs since its really a host service. That would mean gathering logs through vCenter or the support Assistant should gather the important stuff.

On a host though all logs are in the /var/log directory.

Edit:

After clicking submit, I did find a log called vsanvpd.log under /var/log

Ok great. If you need any help with the case please let me know what you need and I will be glad to help out.

In the meantime, if anyone else has this issue or any ideas on troubleshooting this please chime in!

Also, are you using a Windows based vCenter or the vCSA?

upgrade from 5.0 to 5.1

Hi, I have basic questions regarding an upgrade that I'm not sure after reading and searching about it.

1- As I understand, you should put the esxi in maintenance mode before doing the "remediate", but the problem is, as I understand, this shuts down all the VMs (including my vcenter server). After that, I need to connect using vsphere client from my pc to the host directly but when I do that, I don't have the option to "remediate" when I right click on my server. Am i missing something here? I have configured the update manager to automatically shutdown VMs, but clicking to "remediate", I think it tries to do so but fails; "the vm must be moved to another host for the remediation to proceed", is the error I get.

2- I have about 80 patches for version 5.0 to install. Do I have to install them before I upgrade to 5.1?

3- So I guess that when you have only 1 esxi server, you have no choice but to burn a 5.1 esxi dvd and boot the physical server from there and choose upgrade?

Note; all vcenter modules are updated at 5.1, I only need to upgrade the host to 5.1. Update manager installed and configured, all patchs stages.

Thanks

We also recently purchased some APEX cards, and are running 2.3.3 on View 5.3.

A few of our users have similar complaints, however instead of going black they get the 'Network Disconnected' overlay briefly.

I would be very keen to hear your resolution on this. If you get further responses from Teradici, would you mind posting it here?

Thanks,

Rorus.

Primarily on the windows side, it is excel, but it also occurs with outlook. Also it occurs with mac applications, chrome and mail.

I should add, that it also occurs in single and full screen mode, so it isn't necessarily a fusion issue?

thanks

(たぶん、vmxファイルで RemoteDisplay.vnc.keyMap = "jp" を設定)

VMwareコンソール(ディスプレイに相当。今は日本語入力できる状態)

Linux(英語版。日本語キーボードを日本語keymapで認識) ★→ここを英語Keymapのままにしてどうか?

Some beginning esxi 5.5 questions....

Hi All,

I have recently inherit an esxi 5.5 server at work.

At the moment, it has no vcenter. It's a single host. I have a few questions:

1) VCenter Server is something we are planning to deploy. However, I am a little confused. We hae 1 host, and the benefit of vcenter server is to manage multiple hosts. Other than, for a single host scenario, what benefits does it provide? I believe it lets me create vm's on version 10 and clone vm's, is there anything else?

2) Is it possible with a single host to create a VSAN?

3) For this deployment, would this product be right for us? http://store.vmware.com/store/vmwde/en_GB/cat/categoryID.66680900&src=eBIZ_StoreHome_Featured_Essentials_UK

It provides vcenter server essentials, but I can't find any info on this in particular. It lists esxi, but I have that already? As for ops manageer foundation, that would be for monitoring (is there a table to compare versions?). Note this is just 1 physical server with 2 cpus and 12 cores in total.

4) Is it possible to build an esxi cluster with a physical esxi server and an esxi server nested in the original esxi server?

Thanks for all the help!

vMotion is the process to live migrating a powered on VM. Anyway, migrating a powered off VM should work without issues even for a MSCS node. Make sure you don't migrate and power on the VM on the same host as the other node in case you configured MSCS as cluster-across-boxes.

I never tried it, but I think you can even vMotion (unsupported though) a cluster node, if it doesn't have any active cluster resources running!?

Hey continuum!

I don't have a QEMM VM handy, but I found an internal document here (from over a decade ago!) suggesting that it might work if you edit your CONFIG.SYS, find the line which loads QEMM386.SYS, and add this argument to the end of it:
